Edmonton Folk Fest Lineup Announced

The Edmonton Folk Festival announced their lineup today for the 2014 festival, being held August 7-10 at Gallagher Park. There are more then enough performers on the list to make me really excited, but one of my favourite things about this festival is the discovery of new artists and bands. The venue is beautiful- who could ever complain about a natural amphitheatre; sitting on the side of a hill overlooking the downtown skyline while listening to music.

^The super talented Ben Harper will be there this year! This picture was taken in 2010, the last time he performed at the EFMF
^One of my favourite new discoveries at the festival in 2010 was Basia Bulat, who is returning again this year!
On a side note - blonde was totally not my colour...

Tickets go on sale June 7th, and they always go fast! Last year, half of the tickets were available for purchase in person, and the other half went on sale online. The tickets available for purchase online sold out in about 12 minutes, so if you plan on going this year, be sure to be signed in to your Ticketmaster account at the exact second they go on sale!

^Last year was Luke's first time at the Folk Fest, but he seems as excited as I am to return this year, after all the great bands he discovered in 2013 there.

Here's hoping we're able to get tickets again this year! I'd love for Blue Rodeo (this year's Sunday night headliners) to move into the elite category of bands I've seen 4 times...

Subscription Boxes

I have a serious addiction to Subscription Boxes. I love getting mail, and surprises in the mail are even better!

The first one I ever signed up for was Julep, back in April 2012. They are a nail polish based subscription from the US, but they offer many other beauty products as well - lip gloss, lotions, makeup, etc. They've changed their subscriptions slightly since I originally signed up, it is now $24.99/month or $19.99/month with a 3 month subscription. I am still signed up for them but I tend to skip quite a few months (I love that option, otherwise I would have cancelled a long time ago - I absolutely love their products and their nail polish is one of the best I've ever used, but how much does one person need...) If you're interested in signing up with them, feel free to use this LINK. I will post pictures/reviews of every box I receive from now on.

The second one I signed up for was Glossybox, back in April or May 2012. I loved this one, and thought I ended up with some fantastic beauty products from it (plus they came in adorable little boxes which I was easily able to re-use for storing random little odds and ends). Sadly, they stopped shipping to Canada in June 2013.

I've been signed up with Topbox for a little over a year now. It's very affordable, only $12/month plus tax (which is calculated based on the province you live in, so mine is only $12.60, and that includes shipping). I have no intentions of getting rid of that one, it's been sending lots of Benefit products, which are one of my favourites! They also give you the option of creating a wishlist from their specialty boxes each month (some include a slight increase in price, others don't). I typically just go for the regular box so everything is a surprise, but I did add a perfume box to my wishlist for June, so I guess I'll need to wait and see if I get it! I don't have a referral link, I have to manually enter email addresses to invite people if I want referral bonuses.

I'm currently waitlisted with Ipsy, hopefully I'll be able to subscribe soon!

I've also signed up with TeaSparrow, LuxeBox, Spicy Subscriptions and Meowbox, they should all arrive next month! I'll be posting pictures and my opinions once I receive them in the mail, so keep an eye out for that!

Rah-Rah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Roma-Roma-Mamaa

I definitely would not consider myself a pop music person, it's never my first choice of what to listen to. That being said, I have now seen just about all of the current major pop acts in concert within the past few years. I love the stage production of the shows - the lights, the costume changes, the props, the dancers. Last night I was able to scratch off another person from my Concert Bucket List (which I will post at some point, even though it has been shrinking) when I went to a Lady Gaga show. The tickets were part of my Christmas present last year from my boyfriend (along with tickets to the Goo Goo Dolls back in March, Bastille in April and Arcade Fire coming up in August - we're HUGE concert/music people).

Lady Gaga did not disappoint! I thought she put on a fantastic show, and we had great seats. It was a great way to end our concerts for the first half of 2014 (we don't have tickets for anything else until August due to vacations in June and July).

Here are a few of my pictures from last night. I just use a pocket-sized Nikon, but I've always been pleased with the quality of the pictures I'm able to take with it.

*All pictures are my own, please do not use them or copy them without permission*

This was actually her second outfit of the night, I was so excited when she first came out that I didn't have my camera on the proper setting, so all of my pictures turned out blurry...

Outfit #3

I'm fascinated by laser shows at concerts (Nine Inch Nails was incredible for that).
This picture makes it seem like we were really far away from the stage, but we weren't at all!

Outfit #4 - When she originally came out after this costume change, she had a large headpiece and skirt-like thing that made her look like an octopus, but the lighting was red.
Red lighting = gross pictures

Outfit #5

Outfit #6 - She actually changed into this one while on stage...

Outfit #7 - Encore

CHAMPIONS!

I am a HUGE hockey fan, but most of the teams I cheer for are terrible (and I mean TERRIBLE! 1967 since you won a cup? Ugh. First overall draft pick 3 years in a row, and you still can't make the playoffs? Ugh.). Anyways, it turns out I do cheer for one winning team! A huge congratulations to the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL, on their recent victory at the Memorial Cup. They were an exciting team to watch all season, with some future superstars. One of the best gambles I've taken this year was buying a pair of playoff passes to watch them at every single home game of the playoffs. I paid a flat price of $99 per pass (so if they were knocked out in the first round, it would have cost me $50/game/seat). Luckily, they ended up winning the Eastern Conference, and then going on to win the WHL Championship in a thrilling 7 game series, so I ended up getting 11 games out of my passes (I can't complain about $9 hockey games!).

I'm wearing an Oil Kings tshirt (which I caught in a tshirt toss at a game, so it's about 3 sizes too big) today with pride, what an outstanding group of young men who never gave up and brought another Championship to the City of Champions! I look forward to cheering them on next season!

Swirlio Review

Recently, my boyfriend and I have started buying the most ridiculous small kitchen appliances we can find. I was pretty excited about this one - the Big Boss Swirlio. It actually sounded like a useful one (unlike the hot dog toaster Luke bought...) This arrived yesterday...

I love Beyond the Rack! If you don't already shop from this website, use this link to check it out!
http://vnlink.co/SNygiv5

I opened up the box to find it very well packaged! Nothing was going to get broken in this box!
The cats loved these packing air thingys - Pita took a nap, using one as a pillow. Silly girl. The other things in the box are Matt & Nat iPad covers - LOVE!

The idea behind the Swirlio is quite simple - it creates frozen desserts with no added sugar or fat. You choose whatever you want to put into it, so it's can be as healthy as you want it to be (and dairy/gluten free)! It's made entirely of frozen fruit, so it's considered a great snack any time of day. It suggests freezing fruit for at least 12 hours, and using bananas to give you more of an ice cream consistency (without bananas it will supposedly become more of a sorbet).

There are 5 colours to choose from, I of course bought the Red one :)

After freezing your fruit, take it out and let it thaw for ~5 minutes on the counter. We were impatient, and wanted to try it out last night, so we only let our bananas and strawberries freeze for 3 hours, so we didn't feel the need to let them thaw. We mixed up our sliced fruit (along with some frozen raspberries which have been in the freezer for a few months...) in a little bowl.

I forgot to take pictures of the next step, I was so excited to try it haha. All you need to do is place your fruit into the top bowl of the Swirlio (see the picture on the box above), then use the little pusher that comes with it to push it down into the chute. It looks so pretty on the box, but it's basically impossible to make it look like that...Mine turned out horribly, it was almost pure liquid (due to the fruit not being in the freezer long enough), so I put the bow into the freezer for a bit. I had a bag of frozen mangos and peaches in the freezer, so I decided to add some of those to my strawberry/raspberry/banana mush. I mixed the fully frozen fruit in with my mess from the first go-around, and on a whim decided to add a spoonful of Nutella (best decision ever!). This time, after running everything through again, it turned out much better! It was still quite runny, but I at least had actual form to it this time.

I ended up using bananas, strawberries, raspberries, mangos, peaches and Nutella, and it really tasted great! It made a huge serving of it, but I just put my leftovers in the freezer and am currently eating it (a little over 24 hours since I made it - still tastes good!). I can't wait to try different combinations of flavours in my Swirlio! Cleanup was also quite easy, the entire thing just snaps apart, and is dishwasher safe (which doesn't help us, since we don't have a dishwasher - that's what Luke is for! Haha). After using it only once, I would recommend this!

Keep an eye on Beyond the Rack, it's the cheapest I've seen this selling for in Canada. I paid $39.99, and shipping is $6.95. If you're familiar with BTR, you'll know that they rotate through their inventory, so I'm sure the Swirlio will appear again soon. Here is a link for the website - http://vnlink.co/SNygiv5

I forgot to take pictures cooking supper, we decided to finally use our breakfast sandwich maker. I'll try to remember next time we use it though!

Baby Degus

A little over a month ago, my boyfriend and I adopted 6 new degu babies from our local Humane Society. The girl who took my payment and handed us the adoption papers told me it was her first time ever processing six animals at once, but she seemed thrilled that so many had found a new home.
Five out of the six I adopted that day were from the same litter, and the single one was the only male from a litter of females. All six of them were the exact same age, and showed up at the shelter on the same day, so it leads me to believe someone owned a pair of females who came into contact with a male about 3 months ago, and both ended up pregnant.

The five brothers enjoying treats on the drive to their new home

I knew I wanted to introduce the single degu (we decided to name him X - his shelter name was Xander, but that's the name of my boss' son) to the lone degu I had at home. Doug was about 14 months old, and had lost his buddies a few months back. If you've ever had degus, you know that introducing two can be quite tricky (and sometimes disastrous), so we were prepared for the worst. I separated Doug and X with another cage inside their aquarium, but it went so well I allowed them to meet the next day.

The first few minutes after meeting, and already giving kisses and happy squeals through the cage :)

The new boys were all very tame, I was able to get them young enough that they completely trust me (it took a few months of daily interaction with Doug before he allowed me to scratch behind his ears and give him belly rubs).

They were so little when we got them!

They've already grown significantly, and now I'm just waiting for their new custom designed cage to be finished! Once I have it moved into my apartment, I will post pictures!
